Leather is still regarded as the material of choice for many pipe organ components. Typical life expectancy of most organ leathers is between 35 and 70 years. Several factors affect this: climate conditions, air-borne pollutants and original leather quality will all have a bearing on how long the leather lasts.
Simple tests are done to determine the state of the leather. In most cases, replacement of the leather is not necessary until the deterioration has actually caused part of the organ to malfunction. Once this happens, all leathers must be replaced, assuming all of are the same age.
Fischer Organ Company has the tooling and jigs necessary to releather nearly any type of pneumatic action. We use only the highest quality leather and materials available on the world market. Each releathered component is carefully tested before leaving our shop, ensuring proper functionality when it is installed.
